Meet Angela.

😲💪👍👏
Thank you, Angela, for such a wonderful reflective piece on the Challenge, what you learnt and the wonderful work that Team Evie do.

When I saw the first Team Evie Million Steps Challenge advertised my immediate thoughts were that it was a great chance to get fit, a good idea to get me out of the house and a wonderful charity to try to raise some money for.

My next thought was I could never raise money because I hate asking people, even if it’s a good cause. I needn’t have worried on that score because all the money I raised was done through Facebook. I never had to ask anyone individually. I was very happy with the amount I raised through hardly any effort, just through posting my profile on Facebook from time to time.

Team Evie does such excellent work that I was glad to help out a little. I love how the money they raise goes straight to help people who need it the most, especially sick babies and children.

As I have now reached 60, getting fitter was always a goal of mine, but I was never going to join a gym. I have arthritis in my knees and have been advised that walking is a great way to strengthen them. Joining the Million Steps Challenge seemed like an ideal way to improve fitness and my knees in one go.

The challenge began at the end of January. The weather was not great for a while with many storms around. Mostly I could make myself go out and brave the weather, but not always! I quickly found ways to increase my steps inside the house. For instance, it’s quite surprising how many steps you can do getting ready for bed or just marching on the spot. If I had clean laundry to carry upstairs then I would make several trips or I would use the upstairs bathroom rather than the one downstairs. When doing food shopping I would park on the far side of the car park. At first, I felt tired after long walks outside, but after a while, they became easier.

Walking gave me time to think or occasionally listen to music. There was also ample time to send up a few prayers. I have always loved where I live, but I started to appreciate it much more when a lot of my walks started from and ended at home. Walking during springtime was a pleasure, seeing all of the trees and flowers coming to life.

I completed the challenge on day 99. I have done some walking since, not as much as I should have, but still more than I would have before the challenge. When I saw that a new challenge was beginning in June, the only thing holding me back was the thought of who might sponsor me this time round. However, there are still plenty of friends on Facebook who might be kind enough and perhaps I might raise some courage to ask people face to face.
I am looking forward to starting again and my aim this time is to improve my pace.
