Team Evie and One Million Steps come together for inaugural 2020 challenge
Cardiff based start-up nominate North of England based charity to raise funds for children and families.
Social good start-up One Million Steps have teamed up with Team Evie for the inaugural Million Steps Challenge on 27th January 2020.
Recently shortlisted finalist for The Great British Entrepreneurs Social Good Award Wales, Cardiff based One Million Steps hopes to raise millions of pounds for charities of all sizes.
Participants walk an average of 10,000 steps a day for 100 days which is one million steps or 500 miles. Research shows the average Briton walks only 3000 to 4000 steps a day with one poll showing, for many, it could be as low as 2000 steps.
Every participant receives a Bluetooth pedometer and a special app to track their progress so they can receive fitness content and challenge friends. Importantly, as part of their journey, participants also get an introduction to mindfulness and strength and conditioning to complement their 100-day challenge.
Founder Ranjit Ghoshal’s vision is to create a level playing field so that the smallest community group or business to the largest organisations all have the same powerful tools to come together and fundraise for social good.
Team Evie was not only a perfect fit for that vision but also Ranjit’s wish to support children and families who were facing distress. The charity supports 18 different wards and medical teams across the North East of England and Cumbria by raising vital funds to purchase medical equipment, provide training to help save children’s lives, make time in hospital easier for sick children, reduce stress for families and be there for bereaved parents in their time of need.
As a small regional charity, Team Evie already run their own events but was looking for a more inclusive challenge for their supporters and one with less impact on the critical work the charity provided.
Ranjit said: “Smaller charities struggle to organise local events and often the passion is not translated into a return on investment from limited resources. Big overseas events are great but fundraising levels are high and the cost of golden tickets in major athletic events are often beyond the reach of many charities. These factors helped us to model the Million Steps challenge to ensure these barriers were overcome. Health and fundraising are our big goal.”
“We believe that the 100-day challenge will also encourage more people and businesses who worry about fitness levels to get involved, get fitter, make a social good difference and take on much tougher challenges in the future.”
Greg Johnston, CEO of Team Evie said, “As a charity, we are always conscious of where our resources are spent. Sometimes it’s hard to convey the organisational hurdles and costs involved in getting just 20 people to do a challenge event. We were looking for something that we could trial, and that allowed us to scale in the future.”
“The Million Steps platform allows us to engage with supporters and businesses not just across the regions we operate in, but nationally and internationally in the future. This reduces costs not just for Team Evie but also for participants, who don’t have to travel to events or pay high entry fees.”
The Million Steps platform streamlines event management by providing integrated fundraising pages, Gift Aid collection, charity landing pages and participant sign-up, and the ability to embed explainers or videos in customisable pages with easy-to-use templates.
